Memory care facilities provide housing, care, and therapies for seniors who have Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia in an environment designed to reduce confusion and prevent wandering. We are paid by our participating communities, therefore our service is offered at no charge to families. With the lawsuit, Ms. James seeks to prevent new resident admission, install monitors to oversee the facility's operations and finances, and ban existing or hidden owners from their roles. Among the examples noted in the lawsuit, a diabetic man was given a wheelchair without footrests, forcing him to drag his feet on the floor — leading to sores. Part of his toe had to be amputated at the hospital as a result of the infections, and not long after he returned to the center, he died, the investigation found.

And the last straw was a rude employee hung up on my Mom when she was trying to find out where my Grandmother's clothes were. My Mom called me in tears, so we will be bringing her home for rehab. Please think twice before taking your loved one there.
I have tried looking into better nursing homes, but the Brian Center is all my money will allow me to budget. All in all the Brian Center will do if you stay on top of things. I love helping improve facilities for the old and disabled. My cousin was in this facility for rehab for 30 days. She has congestive heart failure and was very weak.

Rather than LPN's on the halls they are mostly staffed with Med Techs who have little or no knowledge of the patients. New ones show up daily and can rarely answer questions about patient status when asked. A facility that is responsible for the health and well being of patients should not be focused on profit but on quality patient care.
Prior to Covid restrictions, family was able to check in on her regularly. There were some concerns that were either brought to the staffs' attention by family members or in one case a report was made to DHEC. After Covid restrictions were put in place and family was not able to see my sister regularly, things went down hill quickly. Due to her mental condition, visitations at the window or through Facetime, were not an option. We relied on regular check-ins with the staff which became few and far between. We tried to call multiple times only to be disconnected or sent to a mailbox that was full.
Nursing Home Reviews for Brian Center Nursing Care - St Andrews
We had growing concerns regarding my sisters care and overall well being. Per the family's request, my sister was presented to her primary care physician for a physical. After examining her, the physician made a report to Adult Protective Services. My sister was malnourished, dehydrated, had a severe UTI, an eye infection in both eyes, bed sores and was not able to stand because of excruciating pain caused by extended immobility.
During her stay, full covid precautions were in place so we could not visit. She said they immediately put her in diapers because she needed help to get up to go to the bathroom and they didn't want to take the time to help her. On top of that, they didn't change her regularly, so she sat in urine for extended periods of time. Because of the congestive heart failure, she is on a daily diuretic. The Brian center was refusing to give her the diuretic because they didn't want to change her diapers more than they had to already. During her stay, my cousin gained 27 lbs of water weight from the lack of her diuretic and was so swollen she was almost unrecognizable.
At this point, they wouldn't let us in to see her, so She demanded that they call an ambulance ant take her to the ER. They begged her to give them 3 days to get the water retention resolved and they started to give her the diuretic. My cousin was supposed to be there 90 days for the much needed physical therapy but we got her out just shy of 30 days because of the way they were treating her. Once we got her home she got very sick and we had to take her to the ER a day after we got her home. Turns out she had picked up a UTI in the Brian center from sitting in her own urine for so long and not being bathed regularly. The infection was so bad that it had gotten into her bloodstream and she went septic.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services does their best to provide a fair assessment of every Nursing Home, but please note these ratings are a snapshot in time.
